A King's Scholar, Roberts went on to King's College Cambridge, of which he was a Fellow 1756 - 1761. He was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1752. From 1760 - 1771 he was an assistant master at Eton, and was elected a Fellow in 1771. Rector of Whiston, Northants, from 1762 - 1782, he also held the living of Everdon from 1778 - 1779, when he became rector of another Eton living, Farnham Royal. He was one of the King's Chaplains from 1772 until his death. He published several works of blank verse and was also a biblical critic.

Content description

The papers include an account book for his three livings, for an estate in Monmouthshire and for his Eton positions. There is also a letter on the statue of Henry VI paid for by Edward Betham.
