Harold Caccia was at Eton from 1919 - 1924, when he went up to Trinity College, Oxford. He held the Laming Travelling Fellowship at Queen's College, Oxford in 1928 (becoming an honorary fellow of the college in 1974) and in 1929 joined the Foreign Service. Before the war he served in London, Peking and Athens and during it was posted to North Africa and Italy before returning to Greece in 1944. From 1951 - 1954 he was Ambassador in Austria and from 1956 - 1961 to the USA, returning to serve as Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Office from 1962 - 1965. From 1964 he was additionally head of the Diplomatic Service. Among his other roles he was a member of the Advisory Council on Public Records 1968 - 1973 and Lord prior of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem 1969 - 1980. In 1963 he was made an honorary fellow of Trinity College, Oxford. He received the KCMG in 1950, KCVO in 1957, GCMG in 1959 and GCVO in 1961 and was made a peer in 1965.

Some further correspondence of a mainly trivial nature can be found in COLL/PG/15 and some of Provost Charteris's files were begun by Provost Caccia. The Library holds a large collection of Caccia family papers including material relating to his diplomatic career.
