Administrative / Biographical history

Roger Lupton (1456-1540) was born in Sedbergh but nothing is known of his early education. He graduated from Cambridge in 1483 and in 1484 was Rector of Harlton, Cambridgeshire. In 1500 he was appointed a Canon of Windsor (to which in 1528 he added a prebend at Lincoln). He was elected a Fellow of Eton for a short while before becoming Provost, and also appears to have held at some stage the livings of Croperdy, Oxfordshire, Brancepeth, Durham and Shipton, Oxfordshire. He was also a Clerk of the Hanaper from 1509, and was appointed Keeper of Petitions the following year. At Eton his name is preserved in the tower gateway to the Cloisters and in the chantry chapel he added to College Chapel, but he was also a benefactor to his native Sedbergh. He founded a chantry there and in 1528 raised it to a school, providing at the same time scholarships for six of the pupils at St John's College, Cambridge. In 1536, after his resignation from Eton, he added two further scholarships and two fellowships. He is buried in College Chapel.
