Papers of Provost Barnard, 1765 - 1781
Series
A King's Scholar 1732 - 1735, he went on to St John's College, Cambridge, becoming a Fellow there in 1744. In 1752 he returned to Eton as a private tutor and in 1754 was appointed Head Master. He was Rector of St Paul's Cray and Footscray in Kent, also Vicar of Ospringe from 1756 - 1777. In 1760 he was appointed a Canon of St George's, Windsor and he was elected Provost in 1765, succeeding Stephen Sleech.

Further letters from him in ED 352. A christening robe linked to him, probably that of his son Edward, belongs to the Colonial Willaimsburg Foundation, USA. (see Linda Baumgarten : What Clothes Reveal (Yale 2002) fig.231).
