Elected a King's Scholar in 1930, he left Eton in 1936. After wartime service in the Royal Artillery he came to Eton as an assistant master in 1946, and held a house from 1956 - 1972. He was elected Vice-Provost in 1979. He was a keen cricketer and presented papers on the Eton-Harrow match at Lord's to the library.
