Papers of Matthew Archibald Nicholson, 1986-1988
Series
A King's Scholar from 1936 - 1941, and Captain of the Boats, he saw war service in the RAF. He then took a 1st in the classical tripos at King's College Cambridge and was President of the University Boat Club. He returned to Eton as an assistant master in 1947, taking on a house between 1963 and 1978, and retired in 1984. In 1951 he took over the coaching of the VIII. In 1986 he was elected Vice-Provost, but ill-health forced him to retire in 1988. He was a lover of Eton and Etonian tradition; he led those who regretted the replacement of river bathing by a swimming pool. He fought hard against the abolition of the Choir School. His knowledge and love of Eton were to be put to use, in collaboration with David Macindoe, on a history of Eton, but both men died with the task scarcely begun.
1968 - 1995
An assistant master 1947.3 - 1984.3, house master 1961 - 1978 and Vice-Provost 1986 - 1988, when he retired due to ill-health.
