Series
A King's Scholar 1874 - 1881, he was successively in the Newcastle Select, Medallist and Scholar, and in College Wall and Mixed Wall, before going on to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he gained a first class classics degree and won numerous prizes. Elected a Fellow of Trinity, he returned to Eton as an assistant master in 1886. In 1898 he became a house master and in 1920 he was elected Vice-Provost. He drowned himself in a fit of depression in 1929 and the Macnaghten Library is named after him.
