Burton, who was not educated at Eton, was a Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He was elected a Fellow of Eton in 1733 and appointed to the College living of Mapledurham, marrying his predecessor's widow a year later. He was Vice-Provost of Eton College from 1752 until his death in 1771. In 1766 he was appointed to another College living, Worplesdon. In both places he spent his income for the benefit of the living and parishioners. In addition to his edition of five Greek tragedies he published many sermons and tracts.
