Modbury, Devon: Declaration concerning parish church
Item
31 July 1331
Declaration of John, Bishop of Exeter, pronouncing the Abbot and Convent of St Peter super Divam [St Pierre-sur-Dives] to be the rightful possessors of the parish church of Modbury, saving always the Bishop's right of instituting the vicar. At a visitation of the Archdeaconry of Totnes the proctor of the monks of the abbey had asked for such a declaration, exhibiting letters of Reginald de Valle Torta, Knight, sometime patron of the Church granting them the patronage, and of John, sometime Bishop of Exeter, granting the appropriation of the same, and producing witnesses. The said letters and witnesses were examined and the title of the Abbey was admitted. Given in the Palace at Exeter.
