Item
6 January 1364
Indenture of lease by brother William Helyes, prior of the hermitage of Stratfield Saye, to John Haywode and John Honcrythe of the land at Stratfeld Say called Wythemere. To hold from the date of these present to next Michaelmas and thereafter for six years, during which term the lessees, at their own expense, are to manure, plough, fallow re-plough and do all other works to the premises and to sow such portion of the land as for the season each year it shall be for the common profit of both parties that there should be sown with such grain as the land requires. And the prior shall find a third part of the seed for the said land and the lessees the other two thirds. Afterwards when they have sown the said portions of land completely, they are to repair and mend the close round the said land with the trees growing there without making waste or destruction in the same. And in autumn time in the reaping and binding of the corn the prior shall take no part, but only the said farmers who at their own expense shall do all the works. And when they have collected the corn the prior shall receive a moiety of the sheaves for his own use. Stratfeld Say.
