Content description
Composition before Alexander, prior of St Margaret of Marlborough, of a dispute between the abbot and convent of Bec, by their proctor, brother William de Guynevill, and Hugh, rector of the church of Bereford [Barford], concerning tithes issuing from the demesne of the lord of Bereford belonging to the church of Bec; by which the said William leased to the rector for his life all the said tithes for a rent of 7s to be paid at the manor of Cotesford [Cottisford], viz. 3s 6d at Easter and 3s 6d at Michaelmas. A penalty by 3s for any failure to pay the rent. On the death of the rector or his transference from that church, the tithes to revert to the monks.
The papal mandate is cited which instructs the prior to hear the cause in which the abbot and convent of Bec complain that the rector of the church of Cestreton [Chesterton], Ralph (de Cestreton), knight, and various others, clerics and lay, of the cities and dioceses of Salisbury, Winchester and Lincoln, injure the plaintiffs with regard to tithes, rents etc. Dated at Lyons 26 August 1249.
Seal, pointed oval, natural colour wax, on doubled tags.
