Cottisford, Oxfordshire: Counterpart release from bond

Counterpart of indenture between the Provost and College and John Cope of Cottesford, esquire. By recognisance of the same date John Cope is bound to the Provost and College in £80. By indenture of 17 November 1619 Maximilian Pettie, of Lincoln's Inn, esquire, leased to Charnell Pettie, of Lincoln's Inn, esquire, Barsis Place with four yard lands of arable [in Cottisford], for 21 years from the death of Penelope Collins, wife of William Collins, late of Cottesford, gentleman for a peppercorn rent, with the proviso that if either Maximilian Pettie or John Cope paid Charnell Pettie in the common dining hall of Lincoln's Inn the sum of £50 within one year after Mary Pettie, natural sister of Harcourt Pettie, gentleman, having accomplished the age of 21 years, should convey to John Cope her interest in the premises, or, in the event of her death before that age, if the said John and Maximilian should pay the said Charnell £50 in three weeks after the notice of her death, that then the said lease should be void. The Provost and College now grant the said John that if he or Maximilian pay Charnell the sum of £50 as in the said proviso, or otherwise indemnify them in respect of the premises (which they have received by conveyance from the said John) the aforesaid recognisance shall be void.
