Blakenham, Suffolk: Letter concerning felling timber
Item
5 April 1767
G. Emly, Monks Ely, to the Rev. Mr Cooke, fellow, reporting on a visit to Blakenham. Wake has been felling timber. "I have heard the felling timber without the knowledge of the owner is now made Felony, and the person who does it liable to be transported." "I wish you would send or come and look a little into your affairs there, and set them to rights if you can. For if you don't do it while a certain old copyhold tenant is living and who is willing to give you all the information he can, I think you can never expect such another opportunity. I saw Wake but I said nothing to him, nor him to me. I think he did not know me; nor did I ride about his fields and woods as I us'd to do, lest he should suspect me."
