Eton, Buckinghamshire: Letters patent

Letters patent granting the Provost and College two fairs at Eton on a ground of theirs called Michelmylwardeshey for nine days each year viz. for three days following Ash Wednesday and for six (There is an error here in the Calendar of Charter Rolls (vol. VI p. 39) where "sex" has been translated as "three"), days following the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with exemption from the jurisdiction of the King's purveyors and ministers. The grantees to have cognisance of all pleas of trespasses and contracts at the said fairs in their court.
Witnesses: John, archbishop of Canterbury, chancellor, W., bishop of Lincoln, and Thomas, bishop of Bath and Wells, Humphrey, duke of Gloucester, and J., duke of Norfolk, J. earl of Huntingdon, Humphrey earl of Stafford and W. earl de la Pole, steward of the household, Sir Ralph, lord of Cromwell, and Sir Ralph Boteler, lord of Sudley, treasurer, Knights.

Ornamental pen work on letters of top line. Within the H. of Henricus a shield with the royal arms, surrounded by the Garter with the words "hony soyt qui male y pense" and surmounted by a crown.
