Royal Patents: Grant of authority for foundation of the College

Grant by William, bishop of Lincoln, of his authority consent and faculty for the royal foundation of a college in the parish church of Eton and the making of ordinances and statutes for the governance of the same. The manor of Nettelham, 29 September 1440.
Seal, pointed oval, 80 x 50 mm., red wax on green silk cords. In three niches beneath gothlc canopies, the virgin enthroned with the Child on her right knee between on the left St. Michael slaying a dragon, with a shield with a cross on it, on a plinth inscribed S' MICH, and on the right St. Hugh of Lincoln on a plinth inscribed S' HUGO; above the central canopy the Trinity; below, the bishop, with staff, in prayer, between two shields of arms, on the right a cross moline (Alnwick), on the left, two leopards courant, in chief ? Virgin and Child.
