Royal Patents: Ordinance concerning election of fellows

Ordinance of William [Laud], Archbishop of Canterbury, upon consideration of a complaint by fellows of King's College, Cambridge, and the reply thereto, that five, at least, of the seven fellows of Eton be elected from King's College, but that the number of fellows need not be raised to the original number of ten, but may remain for the present at seven as it has done since the dissolution and restoration of the college by Edward IV, when the rents were diminished. The example of Winchester and New Colleges is cited. Given at Lambeth, 11 March 1636/7. Signature of the archbishop.
Seal, pointed oval, about 80 x 55mm., reddish brown wax, on doubled tag, only the central part surviving. Armorial, on a pallium over a sword in pale, four crosses fitchee. The shield surrounded by decorative strapwork.
