Royal Patents: Grant of freedom from ecclesiastical jurisdiction

Grant by William, Bishop of Lincoln, at the request of the King and with the consent of the chapter of Lincoln and of Thomas Bekynton, archdeacon of Buckingham, that the Provost and College of Eton and the parishioners of Eton shall be free from the jurisdiction of the archdeacon of Buckingham, and assignation to the Provost of the archidiaconal authority within the said College. As indemnity to the archdeacon, the College is to pay yearly 22s 11d. Given at the manor of Lidyngton, 7 September 1443. Confirmation by the Dean and Chapter, at The Chapter House, Lincoln, 8 September 1443. Confirmation by Thomas Bekynton, archdeacon of Buckingham, at the chapel of the Blessed Mary of Colbrook, 12 September 1443.

The initial U contains a drawing of the Assumption with four angels. The Virgin, draped in ermine wearing a crown with a tall pointed cap, surmounted by a ball. The uprights contain, on the left the royal arms, on the right a heraldic beast gorged, holding a banner with the cross of St George in red upon it. Ornamental penwork at the top and left side which includes a dragon, a rabbit, two scrolls, and at the top right, a shield of arms, a cross moline, surmounted by a mitre.
