Royal Patents: Copy of grant of freedom from ecclesiastical jurisdiction

Copy of grant by William, Bishop of Lincoln, at the request of the King and with the consent of the chapter of Lincoln and of Thomas Bekynton, archdeacon of Buckingham, that the Provost and College of Eton and the parishioners of Eton shall be free from the jurisdiction of the archdeacon of Buckingham, and assignation to the Provost of the archidiaconal authority within the said College. As indemnity to the archdeacon, the College is to pay yearly 22s 11d. Given at the manor of Lidyngton, 7 September 1443. Confirmation by the Dean and Chapter, at The Chapter House, Lincoln, 8 September 1443. Confirmation by Thomas Bekynton, archdeacon of Buckingham, at the chapel of the Blessed Mary of Colbrook, 12 September 1443.

The initial U contains a drawing of the Assumption with four angels. The Virgin, draped in ermine, the flesh tinted pink. The uprights contain, on the left the royal arms, on the right St George slaying the dragon, a red cross on his vest. To the left and below, the King in ermine-lined gown and cap, kneeling in prayer at a desk with an open book on it. From his mouth issues a scroll on which is written SALVE REGINA MATER MISERICORD. Above the initial is a crown supported by leopards. Floral decoration to the left of the initial and ornamental penwork at the top line, including a garter in the form of S, and four feathers issuing from scrolls, and to the right, a shield of arms, a cross moline, surmounted by a mitre.
