Royal Patents: Public instrument of admission of masters and scholars to Eton College

Public instrument testifying that on 15 September 1443 in the chapel of St Nicholas within the collegiate church of Eton in the presence of William, earl of Suffolk, master Thomas Bekynton, keeper of the Privy Seal, master John Carpenter, master of the hospital of St Anthony in London, master Richard Andrew, the King's secretary, and master William Say, the King's chaplain, also of master John Clerc, vice-provost of the college, and of masters Thomas Harlow, William Weye, William Westbury, Thomas Weston and John Boner, fellows, and of John Blakeney, John Say and Richard Fowey, public notaries, William Waynflete, Provost, sitting and declaring the King's intentions concerning his lately founded colleges, added amongst other things that the poor scholars of Eton, when sufficiently grounded in grammar, should be received for further education at the college of the Blessed Mary and St Nicholas and that no others should be admitted until these had first been admitted. The Provost then admitted two masters of arts, Williamn Hatteclyff and William Town, of the dioceses of Coventry and Lichfield and of Lincoln, to be gremials of Eton College. They made their oath, which is recited. He then admitted John Langport and Robert Dummer, of the dioceses of Salisbury and Winchester, as poor scholars, later to be transferred to the college of the Blessed Mary and St Nicholas. They made oath.
