Royal Patents: Release from customary obligations
Level
Item
Date
17 July 1446
Content description
The King to his lieges inhabiting the parish of the collegiate church of Eton, who are liable to heavy burdens in the repair of the nave of the church and the enclosure of the cemetery and in the finding and repairing of chalices, books and vestments. Except and apart from the due and accustomed maintenance of a parish clerk there, release to the said parishioners from all customary obligations but the payment of tithes and oblations, together with mortuaries which they have accustomed to pay for forgotten tithes. This exoneration must not be taken as an excuse for diminishing their devotion in the providings of offerings and lights and other pious works. Given at Westminster by the King.
The Great (Golden) Seal, green wax, on plaited blue and white silk cords. Ornamental penwork to the top line.
