Content description

Confirmation by John, archbishop of Canterbury and papal legate, of the statutes of the College, especially of one [recited] concerning visitation by the metropolitan and ordinary visitation by the bishop of Lincoln. Given at Lambeth, 6 July 1446. Confirmed also by the prior and convent of Christchurch, Canterbury, who would exercise the archbishop's powers during any vacancy of the see, 14 July 1446.
Two Seals, red wax:
1) The archbishop. Pointed oval, 92 x 55 mm, on plaited pink and blue silk cords. Beneath a triple canopy, St Thomas kneeling in prayer to the Virgin enthroned. On the right three knights armed, attacking him. To the right and left figures in Gothic compartments. Above, and in the centre niche [God the father] seated, both hands raised in blessing, on either side in a niche an angel. Below, in a rounded arch, the archbishop in prayer, between two shields of arms, on the left the see of Canterbury, on the right on a chevron [a mitre]. ...[? SEDIS GEN] ARCHIEPI CANTUARIENS
2) Christchurch. Round, 94 mm, on plaited pink silk cords. Obverse. The church with three towers. Between the towers two angels swinging censers. SIGILLUM: ECCLESIE: XPISTI: CANTUARIE: PRIME: SEDIS: BRITANNIE. Reverse. The church without towers. Through a double archway can be seen the murder of St Thomas. Several figures in archways and windows. Above the roof, two angels with crowns. EST HUIC VITA MORI PRO QUA DUM VIXIT AMORI MORS ERAT ET MEMORI PER MORTEM VIVIT HONORI
