Hanging Langford, Wiltshire: Letter concerning enclosure
Item
23 December 1815
William Moody, to the bursar, "A note bearing the signature of William Roberts, Bursar, was put into my hands upon my return home yesterday, the nature of which, I must confess, has much surprised me, as it is not that, which one gentleman would expect to receive from another. Its purport seems a defence of the College agent Mr Oakley's conduct and an araignment of my solicitors and mine own. With respect to the latter, i have only to assure you, that I not only proposed the Enclosure, but desired it, considering it a public as well as private advantage, but since I perceive from the difficulties which on both sides arise respecting its completion (the one contending for rights which the other asserts to be 'Bastard', this other side assuming priviledges is does not possess) that it is likely to be attended with certain disputation, and but doubtful benefit, I no longer desire, but shall certainly forbit on may part, any further proceedings on the subject", etc.
