Indented instrument by Master Thomas Barker, late parson of Petworth. The Provost and College of Eton, by a grant sealed with their common seal of 2 January 1484, confirmed to William Baker, clerk, John Wode, the younger, Edmund Dawtrey, John Stanney, John Dawtrey, John Comber, William Ford and John Dyer a yearly rent of 20s from the lands called Fyssher and Bremfast, co. Sussex, for the use of Thomas Baker and his heirs. Now Barker, by his last will, has disposed of the rent as follows. The aforementioned grantees shall suffer the church wardens of the parish church of Petworthe to receive the same and distribute as follows: 40d for an obit yearly in the said church, with placebo and dirige, to be sung "on the evyn that is shall hapne the said maistre Thomas Barker to departe owte of this wrecchid worlde", and a requiem mass to be sung there yearly on the morrow following the souls of himself, his father and mother "and all my good doers", 40d to be distributed among the poor on the day of the obit as alms, 13s 4d to the repair of the church.
If the obit is ever not celebrated, or the alms fail to be distributed, the dean and chapter of the cathedral of Chichester to receive the money and celebrate the obit in the cathedral for two years and then to return it to the church wardens, and so for each default.
