Climping and Petworth, Sussex: Letter concerning renewal of lease
Item
2 December 1758
2 folios
Thomas Barnard, Cursitors Alley in Chancery Lane, to Mr William Brookland, Eton College, asking him to represent to the gentlemen of the College that the demand for £75 for a renewal of the lease is excessive. £50 has always been the usual sum. The farm has not been let for one farthing more than it was in Mr Merlott's time. "We hope they will not be so very severe upon a fatherless infant for whom we are trustees and if the College persists upon having the £75, or such like high fines, it will be a discouragement to have any concern with their estates. Therefore we hope they will be content with £60 at the most."
