Bledlow, Buckinghamshire: Letter concerning trees
Item
5 December 1827
2 folios
Anonymous letter from Bledlow, to Rev George Bethel, bursar, complaining that the College bailiff, J J Harper, has cut down the trees in front of the houses at Church end "that was planted to shelter them from the scorching sun in the summer and the storm in winter." He is also said to be going to stop up a road which is "the most convenent that can be made and which cost the parish a considerable sum." A great deal of wood must have been cut down by Harper and not accounted for to the College. "I can ashure you that he is one of the most disceatfull men you will ever met - his object is self, depend on it, and when you know him as well as his is known in Bledlow you will find it so. He is disliked by all who knough him, and if ever the College have the woods in their hands again they will be hily to blame to let him have the control of them. If you new his character as we do, you whould be ashamed to be seen in his company."
