Chalcots, Middlesex: Letter concerning a lease
Item
24 March 1842
5 folios
William Tooke, Private, to the Rev George Bethell, enclosing copy of a letter from Pemberton & Co in which they express astonishment that the College lease of Chalcots has no less that 17 years to run whereas the basis of the treaty was that it had only 12 or 13 years to run from 1839. The lease had in fact been renewed to Mr Clarke for 20 years from 1839, in the middle of the negotiations. They demand compensation if the business is to go on. Tooke refers to "a very untoward element of delay if not disunion, all arising out of an obvious act of inadvertence on the part of Mr Driver who is of course desirous of shifting the blame on the College and its advisors". It was Mr Driver's obvious duty to apprize himself of the realities of the situation. "I must add however of that in the present temper of the Commisssioners and their surveyor, if it is desirable for the College that the exchange should take place, a sacrifice must be made..."
