Counterpart of lease, by the Provost and College to John Smythe, the elder, of Walden, co. Essex, gentleman, of the site of the manor of Hullavington, and the parsonage there with the tythes of Surrendon and Bradfelde and elsewhere belonging to the same in such manner as John Punter now hath the same, except the advowson of the vicarage and all fines, reliefs, heriots, perquisites of courts, woods and underwoods, and wards and marriages. From Lady day 1568 or whenever a lease to John Punter, yeoman, shall be void, for 20 years. Rent £34 15s 2d. The lessee undertakes, inter alia, to maintain all the mounds about the wood called Stokewood and all other woods and the springs of the same from the bite and harm of all cattle having stuff allowed therto out of such places within the lordship where it may best be taken, and that at such time of the year as no harm may come by the fall thereof. The lessee to gather the perquisites of courts etc. and account for the same to the College, and find lodging and sustenance for the lessors for two days and three nights.
