Langley Marish and Wyrardesbury, Buckinghamshire: Statement of title
Item
mid 15th century
1 manuscript
Statement of the title of the Earl of Oxford and his wife to the manors of Langle Mareys and Wirardesbury.
The descent is traced from Richard Mounfichet, beginning with an extent made after his death, on 30 January 1268, to Elizabeth (Howard), wife of twelfth Earl of Oxford. It is illustrated by a geneological tree on the dorse of the document.
The Countess came into her lands in 1424, but her claim to these manors was not recognised. See Victoria County History, Buckinghamshire, Vol. III p. 322. The reversion of the manors was granted to Eton in 1447 and again in 1457 but the property was lost to the College when it was settled on Elizabeth, queen of Edward IV, in 1465.
