Content description
Memorandum concerning the liability of the College to poor rate. The statement that the College from time immemorial has paid the overseers £6 yearly is wrong. From the time of Queen Elizabeth, when the Poor Rates began, to 1675, the College lands then being in their hands, there seems to have been no idea of taxing the College. From 1675 the College began to pay to the poor £6 [which expressly included the gifts of 13s 4d by Dr Bost, 10s by Dr Lupton and 10s by Mr Read], but as a gift not as a composition for taxes. The College raised its donation in 1718 by £15 and in 1769 by another £5. Concerning the exoneration of Mr Vyse's lands.
