Legal opinion by J Dunning, J Mansfield and Stephen Hawtrey, Lincoln’s Inn, with regard to the patronage of the churches of Petworth, North Chapel and Dungton, co. Sussex, Worplesdon, co. Surrey, Farnham Royal, co. Bucks, and Clewer, co, Berks. On 11 February 1771 Dr Burton, incumbent of Worplesdon, died. The patronage of Worplesdon, Farnham Royal and Clewer has been allotted to the College by an exchange in the time of William and Mary, established by an Act of Parliament. ‘We think it most advisable for the College to insist on their title to the churches allotted them by the Act of Parliament, and with that view to present to the church of Worplesdon. They may, if they please, present to the Sussex living, likewise, and thereby make sure of one or the other, however the question may be ultimately decided. But it will be more consistent, as well as more suitable to what is stated to be their wish, to confine their claim to Worplesdon etc. And we think that claim may be supported.’
