Papers of William Keate, 1739 - 1795

A King's Scholar at Eton, William Keate, son of William Keate of Wells, went on to King's College, Cambridge, of which he was a Fellow 1762- 1768. He was master of Stamford Grammar School and in 1768 became rector of Laverton, Somerset. The following year he married Anne, the daughter of John Burland of Wells. He became a Canon of Wells in 1773 (prebend of Combe XV, and of Henstridge in 1774).
He had four sons who are represented in these papers. The eldest, William Burland (1770 - 1817) succeeded him as rector of Laverton. The Head Master of Eton, John Keate (1773 - 1852) was his second son. The third, Thomas Morris (1775 - 1821) became a judge in India and the youngest, Robert (1777 - 1857) a surgeon.
