Another son of William Keate of Wells, he studied at St George's Hospital and became a well-known surgeon. In 1778 he was appointed Regimental Surgeon to the Footguards and in 1798 Surgeon General to the Army in addition to his hospital appointments and he was several times Master of the Royal College of Surgeons. He was compelled to resign as Surgeon to St George's in 1813 but remained surgeon to the Prince of Wales.
He had three children, Emma, Amelia (d.1837) and Edward, who became Colonel of the Foot Guards and Equerry to the Duke of Cambridge.
