Eldest son of William and Anne Keate, he attended Eton briefly before going to school in Bath and then to St John's College, Cambridge, though he first matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford. Having succeeded his father as rector of Laverton, Somerset, in 1795 he was appointed a Chaplain to the Navy in 1796, returning to Laverton in 1801. In 1802 he also became rector of Winfrith Newburgh, Dorset.
