Papers of Francis Edward (Judy) Durnford, 1816 - 1881
Sub-series
Third son of Richard and Louisa Durnford, he came to Eton as a King's Scholar in 1828 and went up to King's College Cambridge in 1835. In 1839 he returned to Eton as an assistant master, and in 1864 was appointed Lower Master. He was appointed a Fellow in 1877, his right to the position having been specifically reserved when the reforms made following the 1868 Public Schools Act altered the original statutes. From 1878 he held the rectory of Creeting, Suffolk, one of the College's livings, and it was there that he died. He and his wife Frances (nee Thompson), whom he married in 1844, had at least eight sons, who attended Eton.
An obituary of him appears in The Eton College Chronicle, 24 February 1881.
