Second son of the Bishop of Chichester, Walter came to Eton in 1859, initially boarding with Mr Stevens but obtaining a King's Scholarship in 1860, He was in the Newcastle Select in 1864 and 1865 and also a member of College Wall. In 1865 he went to King's College, Cambridge, of which he became a fellow in 1869. From 1870 - 1899 he was an assistant master at Eton, then returned to King's, becoming Vice-Provost in 1909 and Provost in 1918 in succession to M.R. James. He was also active in Cambridge politics and served as Mayor of Cambridge in 1905. He was elected a Fellow of Eton in 1910 to represent the University of Cambridge but on becoming Provost of King's automatically took on the role of Senior Fellow. In 1919 he was knighted (GBE). He never married but was clearly close to his nephews and nieces, and the whole family enjoyed visits to his house on the Isle of Wight.
