Edward Herbert: Letter to his mother
Item
16 May 1851
Thanks his mother for the books, waistcoats and pocket handkerchiefs he has received. He has not been examined in anything since the evening he came where he constructed 10 lines and conjugated a greek verb with his tutor. States Lady North's son was flogged 4 times and that very few fellows go through Eton without being flogged. They must learn all the modern names of all the towns, about 300 per map and they do one a week. William Follett has often been swished.
