Second son of William and Anne Keate, he was a King's Scholar at Eton from 1784 - 1791, going on to King's College Cambridge of which he became a fellow in 1795. In the same year he returned to Eton as an assistant master, and in 1803 became Lower Master. This was also the year of his marriage to Frances (Fanny) Brown. From 1809 - 1834 he was Head Master.

In 1820, he was appointed a canon of Windsor and vicar of Nether Stowey, Somerset, giving up the latter position for the rectory of Hartley Wespall, Hampshire, in 1842.

He died 5 March 1852 and was buried at Hartley Wespall.
