Papers of Sir Charles Brown, 1746 - 1827

Charles Brown was born in 1746, and was widely believed to be the son of Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender, and a lady named Cleghorn, who later moved to Newcastle under the name of Brown. He served an apprenticeship in Newcastle with Dr Bayles before moving to London. He married Mary Huthwaite c.1772 and moved to Carmarthen, where 10 children were born to them. Only five survived infancy, and two daughters died in their late teens, leaving only Margaretta, Fanny, and a son called William surviving into adulthood. The family moved to Berlin c.1787 where he became Court Physician to King Frederick William II of Prussia and his wife Sophie Dorothea. He was appointed Privy Counsellor and in 1806 Physician to the Army. He retired c.1808 to Clenchwarton in Norfolk where he bought a farm, named Margaretta Farm. He died 11 May 1827.
