Fanny Keate: Letter from Countess Pauline Neale
Item
1810
Heligoland Xbre 14th 1810
Two months after leaving London still in Heligoland, the wind and the French (23 ships in the river)have been against them repeatedly. Convinced that few could have persevered more than Lady May and herself and if they ever arrive somewhere they may publish 'an augmented addition to the Misery of Human Life'. The Marquis of Wellesley and Mr Yorke have come to their rescue and Lord George 'supplies all our wants long before they are felt'. Were accomodated by the British Resident. The place is inhabited by trades people almost ruined because of the dismal state of the continent. Also fishing people. So windy she lost her shoe and had to go barefoot. Going to move on to another island, Nordeney.
Addressed to Mrs Keate, Eton College Windsor
