Title

Fanny Keate: Letter from Countess Pauline Neale

Level

Item

Date

19 January 1846

Content description

From Berlin. Hopes Fanny's Colombians [Daughter Fanny having moved to Colombo] are settled. Her sister continues to suffer but not complain. The [English] Ministry gave great parties. Glad the King has recovered, his firmness has made him very popular. Your Queen's [Victoria] aspiration seems to be to make a King of her Consort. A pity she did not bring it about before she came on a visit. She was put out of humour. Measles are about, you dont go near any infected street. Less parties as a result. Never dreamt that the little cushion she made would encircle Fanny's 'swan like neck'. Hartley is her ideal of a country life. Her nephew was sorry not to be able to visit but the Princes' tours are like railroads and steamers and it is so short a time for enjoyable tours. It was only in Scotland that Alfred would catch the Prince. Hopes that she heard John's maiden sermon. Longs to visit England which she loves but not the 'absentees' who flock to Italy and Switzerland but not Germany. The winter has been fine and clear and the King has been breakfasting outside, as the Empress does at Palesecco. Very enthusiastic about an angelic singer/actress who has captivated them all at the Palace, with her purity and her unawareness of her powers.
Addressed to Mrs Keate, Hartley Wespall, Hartford Bridge, Hants.
