Fanny Keate: Letter from Countess Pauline Neale
Item
13 November 1846
From Berlin. Glad that her nephew also knows the land and the people that she loves. Went to an event where she was the only person from the previous century. Enjoys talking to the Princess about England which she hopes to return to with her husband. Pauline's chances are rather slim. Would depend on the lotterry to be able to go. Asks after the 'Colombians' and hopes that if they ever return an experienced pilot steers them safely on that dangerous coast. Though she rails at railroads in England at least the other improvements which accelerate communication are a blessing. She loves England so much but would be happy not to see the Isle of Wight again as it sent her suffering back to Hartley, where she wanted to enjoy herself. Treasures the 'dear Doctor's' book of prayers and Marg's fine sermons. Queens birthday celebrations at Charlottenburg delayed as the date is cruelly marked by her mothers death. But for her dear King she would be sadly isolated. Countess Reedes is lost to the world and so even though still living is already dead to her friends. Quiet winter ahead, no one but the Princess of Prussia there. Half tempted to rail at the Princess of Liegnitz who sports her splendid income abroad not being as considerate as Queen Adelaide had been.
