Fanny Keate: Letter from Sarah Broughton
Item
5 July 1848
From Darlinghurst. To Mrs Keate:
Reports a new grandson, child for Phoebe. Her husband the Bishop to be at home more. Hoping her friends passing through Ceylon on their way to England will see the Bishop and Mrs Chapman (Fanny) Reports that Sydney is no longer what it was and is changed for the worst in every respect. Since the awful death of Lady Mary Fitzroy the Governor has lived in discomfort, many people are leaving, even leaving houses they have just built and few of their first friends are remaining. Pleased with the new Commander in Chief, General Wynyard. Mentions the new friends who are arriving in Hobart.
Delighted to hear that Dr Keate can do so much duty without fatigue.Glad to hear of all the remaining parishioners at Hartley, keen that she tells them they are not forgotten.
Addressed to Mrs Keate, Hartley Wespall Hartford Bridge, Hampshire
England - by the "City of Pounah"
