Title

Margaretta Brown: Letter from Dr Brown

Level

Item

Date

11 May 1813

Content description

From Margaretta Farm. Reports that a letter which came from Eton was from Cohen making an absurd suggestion that Drummonds bank should be approached to lend two million (? shillings) for the King of Prussia and that this would be advantageous for him and for Dr Brown. Dr Brown has written to Berlin saying how ridiculous the idea is, to borrow against domains in Silesia. As he thought Drummonds would not lend the money as it was a foreign loan.
Mrs Cunningham suggested his books travelling by land carriage to Hamburg but he thinks it a risk on the Elbe as the French are on the left bank of the river and the Danes are in no humour to show any civility to vessels belonging to England. He doesnt like the French being in such force in a neighbourhood where they can display their military skill and Ruses de Guerre. Rose has been appointed as Minister at the Court in Sweden and invites Dr Brown to come too and study the culture. It made him see 'couleurs de Rose' as he wrote of his nervousness of the Campaign if Austria does not declare now. Dr Brown suprised by the appointment.
Did Dr Keate ever get the catalogue of any books from Evans the Bookseller? He knows he is so busy he does not wish to torment him with letters, but has sent him a watch via a friend via the Windsor Coach.
Mrs Hoseason came to visit, her children are a picture of health, but he wishes he could say they were the models of obedience.
Addressed to Miss Brown, at the revd. Dr Keate's Eton College, near Windsor
