Margaretta Brown: Letter from Dr Brown
Item
5 June 1813
From Margaretta Farm. Glad she has seen Dr Pope, she must avoid parties with rooms overheated by too many persons. Worried by reports of the Continent from Mrs Cunningham that they were expecting accounts of a battle, but now know that it was the retreat of the allied army and advance of the French. All the Royal Family and everyone who had it in their power quit Berlin. French have possession of Hamburg, he shudders to think what will happen to the well intentioned citizens. Several of his acquaintances have been murdered. If the Allies could once again gain advantage over the French as to make them lose Ground they need not fear them rallying again but the misfortune is there is a Terror of Bonaparte amongst the base and despicable. (Much overwritten and illegible)
Sending Margaretta a Bank note of £20. Glad she approves of some of the moleskins going to Mrs Hoseason when they have dried.
Addressed to Miss Brown at the revd. Dr Keate's Eton College near Windsor
