Margaretta Brown: Letter from Fanny Keate
Item
6 November 1810
All the bonfires and fireworks are put a stop to on account of the Princess's death. Her death made hardly an impression on the King. He is much worse than people think and at times quite unmanageable and has constantly two men with him, from Knightsbridge who they say understand the business very well. Yesterday Mrs Battsicombe was nearly two hours putting on leeches but 'you must be mum about this as Mrs Battiscombe told me in great confidence'. The mourning is to be the deepest possible and to last three months. She has just been ordering her mourning clothes. While those at a distance may not be seen to mourn, she who is so near must be seen to mourn properly. The Physicians sit up every night with the poor King who has much fever and does not sleep. Windsor is a most melancholy place at present, every body has a long face. Much of the letter overwritten at 90 degrees and largely illegible.
