John Keate: Letter from Mr Dedel
Item
18 December 1798
Anonymous letter (later note names Dedel as author) written 'when Holland was in the hands of the French.' Reminisces about his former happiness and their time together and Eton. Expresses sorrow at the loss of Keates father and tells of his own father’s confinement without hope of recovery. Writer may have to return the England. Writes extensively about the political situation in Holland: ‘The French have stripped us of our security and... given us all their disastrous follies and abominations, bloody and merciless Jacobins’. Reminisces about mutual connections and wishes to be reminded to them. Asks that a reply to this letter be send under cover to Hamburg and from there forwarded to him. Written from The Hague.
