Eight autograph letters to his future mother-in-law and to his wife’s younger brother, together with a Latin exercise, a letter from his wife about Ionica, and other family correspondence
It includes:
1. Letter from William Johnson Cory to Sophia de Carteret Guille [10 December 1874]
Cory asks Sophia (his future mother-in-law) to be the president and secretary for the Latin classes for girls in Torrington which is he setting up. Details of the classes and possible pupils are also discussed
2. Letter from William Johnson Cory to Sophia de Carteret Guille [22 January 1877]
Mentions that he has relinquished Halsdon to his brother and discusses the importance of Latin exercises, particularly in relation to her daughter Rosa (who later would become Cory’s wife). Enclosed in the letter is a list of thirteen Latin quotations, set as a translation exercise
