William Johnson Cory: Additional papers: William Henry Johnston family collection relating to William Johnson Cory [Marion Hollis collection]

William Henry Johnston was born in Ireland in 1832 and was educated at Eton during Cory’s time as assistant master. Johnston had a number of daughters including Marion, and Blanche. A family tree and further biographical information supplied by Marion Hollis is kept with the papers

The collection includes:
1. Four letters from William Johnson Cory to Marion Johnston [1873-1885] which give Cory’s opinion on the education of women
2. Nine letters from William Johnson Cory to Marion Johnston [1873-1876]
3. Five ‘Halsdon letters’ from Sybil, Marrion or Eddie Johnson when staying with Cory at Halsdon November to December 1877
4. Two cartes-de-viste – one in duplicate dated 1879 and c.1890
5. Blanche Johnston Album containing drawings letters and other notes, includes a contribution by Cory made in 1892
6. Johnston family photographs. Including photographs of William, Marion, Sybil and Blanche Johnston
7. Ivory pen given by William Johnson Cory
8. Photograph of Halsdon 1877 taken during a visit by the Johnston children
9.Two autograph letters, one to both Ethel and Julia, and the other just to Ethel, which relate to places Cory intended visit, as well as reflecting on his life when he was assistant master at Eton. These letters were added to the collection in 2013 by Hollis, having been missed out of the original deposit

The letters were collected by Marion Johnston and passed to her daughters. When her daughters died with no descendants, the collection was discovered and kept by Marion Johnston’s great niece Marion Hollis (the granddaughter of Blanche Johnston) who supplemented the collection with further papers relating to Cory, belonging to her grandmother
