Content description

The files contain correspondence written to and from Anne Thackeray Ritchie and her immediate circle. It consists of over a thousand items this is one of the largest collections of autograph letters held by Eton College Library.

Growing up among her father’s circle of friends, the collection includes letters from Tennyson, Browning, Ruskin and Edward Fitzgerald.

The later correspondence features letters from a variety of notable individuals including Margaret Oliphant, J.M. Barrie, Rudyard Kipling, the artists G.F. Watts and John Everett Millais, reformers such as Octavia Hill and Sir John Simon, and the actresses Fanny Kemble and Helena Faucit Martin.

This collection of letters was previously on loan to University of London Library ref: MS 907
