Series

Date

1850s-[2000]

Extent & medium

4 boxes and 1 oversized folder in separate box with other small related collections

Content description

This series represents individual items which were initially retained by Belinda Norman-Butler due their special significance to her. While the greater proportion of the papers relate to Anne Thackeray Ritchie, the material also concerns other family members including Richmond Thackeray Ritchie; Minny and Leslie Stephen; Hester Ritchie; Belinda Norman-Butler and William Makepeace Thackeray.

The nature of the items can be broadly categorised as correspondence (including transcriptions); notebooks and journals; photographs; sketchbooks and individual drawings; and typescripts.

Arrangement

When deposited at Eton College, the folders and items in this series were stored loose in a suitcase. The original content of the various envelopes has been maintained, and catalogued accordingly, broadly arranged according to the nature of the material.

Associated material

Also included with this Series is a reproduction of photograph of Blanche Ritchie (later Warre Cornish). Original dated 1860.
The item was a gift to Eton College Library in 2016 from William Blacker, via George Ramsden. [Accession no. 2016/40]

Finding aids

An initial box list of all the items contained in the suitcase is kept in the first box for this series and an electronic copy is also available from Eton College Library

Photographs showing the original suitcase are kept by Eton College Library
